Understanding the Use of Ruqyah (Healing Method Based on The Quran and Hadith) in the Treatment of Disease

Understanding the Use of Ruqyah (Healing Method Based on The Quran and Hadith) in the Treatment of Disease

Ruqyah refers to the healing method based on the Quran and hadith through the recitation of the Quran, seeking of refuge, remembrance and supplication that is used as a means of treating sickness and other problems, by reading verses of the Quran, the names and attributes of Allah, or by using the prayers in Arabic or in a language the meaning of which is understood. The use of ruqyah as a method of treatment is popular among the Islamic alternative healing practitioners. This method of ruqyah is based on the recommendations and practices carried out by the Prophet (pbuh) for self-treatment or to help his Sahabah and others. Through analysis of the inductive, deductive and historical approaches, this article aims to explain the views of Imam al-Bukhari in relation to aspects of ruqyah and its use in the treatment of disease by analysing some chapters translated (tarjamah al-bab) by Imam al-Bukhari in the Kitab al-Tibb. The results show that the use of ruqyah in the treatment of diseases refers to the discussion of the seven chapters translated (tarjamah al-bab) on three main issues: [1] The use of ruqyah from the Quran, [2] Conditions in using a ruqyah, and [3] The types of ruqyah recommended by the Prophet.

Let’s first begin with what ruqyah exactly is.

Ruqyah is at the same status of a dua’a, it is nothing more than the recitation of specific Quranic verses or saheeh hadith which are known for seeking refuge in Allah.

More specifically these ayat are said to be a source of healing. Specifically from ailments and sickness, for protection from the evil eye and exorcism of Jinns, or from sihr (meaning black magic or witch-craft).

You do not need to be skilled in order to perform Ruqyah.

In fact, what is best and most perfect is to recite ruqyah yourself, to ask others would be permissible but there are things which are better done by the individual themselves. Performing ruqyah is not complicated, you could begin by simply recite Surah fatiha or the Al-Mu’awwidhaat (Surah Falaq and Surah Nas).

These are regarded as the verses of refuge and it is the Sunnah that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite them when he was sick.

WHAT IS SIHR (BLACK MAGIC) AND IS IT EVEN REAL?

Sihr is definitely real and refers to black magic or witchcraft. In Islam it can be learned by someone who has the knowledge and is a serious crime. There are many passages in the Quran which are testament to it’s danger.

In Surah Baqarah ayah 102 Allah says,

And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, “We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].” And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah . And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.

And In Surah Yunus Ayat 81,

And when they had thrown, Moses said, “What you have brought is [only] magic. Indeed, Allah will expose its worthlessness. Indeed, Allah does not amend the work of corrupters.

HOW TO PERFORM RUQYAH:

The exact process is to make supplication to your palms just as you would when making a dua’a. After blow into your hands and wipe the area which is causing pain or discomfort.

When Prophet Muhammad used to become very ill, Aisha would have done this for him as reported in the following hadith.

QURAN VERSES FOR RUQYAH:

Here’s a list of the different verses from the Quran which can be recited.

SUPPLICATION FOR RUQYAH FROM HADITH THAT CAN BE RECITED:

Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) reported:

When the Prophet (ﷺ) visited any ailing member of his family, he would touch the sick person with his right hand and would supplicate: “Allahumma Rabban-nasi, adhhibil-ba’sa, washfi, Antash-Shafi, la shifa’a illa shifa’uka, shifaan la yughadiru saqaman [O Allah! the Rubb of mankind! Remove this disease and cure (him or her)! You are the Great Curer. There is no cure but through You, which leaves behind no disease].” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Reference is Riyad As Salihin Book 7, Hadith 10, in Arabic this dua is written:

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ مُذْهِبَ الْبَاسِ اشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي لَا شَافِيَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا

From Sahih Al-Bukhari 3371 we can learn the Dua Prophet Ibrahim (A.S) would recite to seek protection from evil eye.

Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek Refuge with Allah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain and say: “Your forefather (i.e. Abraham) used to seek Refuge with Allah for Ishmael and Isaac by reciting the following: Audhu bi kalimatillahi al-tammati min kulli shaytaanin wa hammatin wa min kulli `aynin lammah ‘O Allah! I seek Refuge with Your Perfect Words from every devil and from poisonous pests and from every evil, harmful, envious eye.’ “

The fourth and final dua we will cover is recommended to be recited for pain relief. Mentioned in both Sahih Muslim 2202 and At-Tirmidhi 2080:

Uthman bin Abi Al-‘As narrated:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to me while I had a pain that almost ruined me. So,the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Rub it with your right hand seven times and say A’udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhiru” (I seek refuge with Allah and with His Power from the evil that I find and that I fear).” He said: “So I did it, and Allah removed what I had, and I never seized telling my family and others to do it.”

بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ
أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ

VIRTUES AND BENEFITS OF RECITING RUQYAH

Here are some other hadiths which relay the importance of Ruqyah and when and how to recite.

  • It was narrated from Aishah that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to blow when performing Ruqyah. Sunan Ibn Majah 3528 classified as Sahih (Darussalam).
  • It was narrated from ‘Aishah that the Prophet (ﷺ) commanded her to recite Ruqyah to treat the evil eye. Sunan Ibn Majah 3512 classified as Sahih (Darussalam).
  • In Jami At-Tirmidhi 972 Jibril recited ruqyah for Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to help with his suffering. It was to cure him from evil of every person and evil eye.

THE USE OF ZAM-ZAM WATER

In Ibn Maajah hadith 3062 was classified as hasan and gives insight into the use of Zam-Zam water. It says, the water can be used for many purposes.

It was narrated that Jabir bin Abdullah said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.’”

This would imply Zam-Zam water is sufficient for whatever niyyah (intention) it is drunk for. If you drink it to feel better, Allah will aid you. If you drink it to get fed, Allah will feed you. If you drink it to satisfy your thirst, Allah will quench your desire.

Conclusion:

Inshallah with recitation of these Quranic verses and the authentic duaa’s above, Allah will hear our call for help and will aid us in many ways we can’t understand. We ask Allah and remember him in all that we do so he may heal us, protect our homes, our families, and make us among the best of believers. Keep your iman (your faith) strong, ignore the whispers of the Shayateen, understand somethings take longer than we wish they would.

Allah knows what’s best for you.

Benefits of reciting various verses of the Holy Qur’an

Benefits of reciting various verses of the Holy Qur’an

Verses to be recited after prayers

Some actions are to be performed after the completion of every compulsory prayer and these are called Ta’qibaat. Out of the numerous actions that have been recommended, there are a few verses of the Holy Qur’an that have also been prescribed and carry much reward if recited after the daily prayers.

The following is a list of the verses that should be recited and a note of the reward gained for the recitation of each one.

1. Ayah ash-Shahada (Surah Ali-’Imran: 18-19)

In the commentary of Majma’ul Bayaan, it is narrated from the Holy Prophet that those who recite this ayah make a covenant with Allah (S.w.T.) and Allah always fulfils His covenants. If this ayah is recited after every prayer, then Jannah is guaranteed to the reciter.

2. Ayah al-Mulk (Surah Ali-’Imran: 26-27)

It is narrated that the Holy Prophet (S) once advised one of his companions, who was in debt, to recite this ayah after every prayer and then supplicate to Allah (S.w.T.) for the repayment of his debts saying that even if the debts are equal to the entire land on Earth, they will be repaid.

3. Ayah al-Kursi (Surah al-Baqarah: 255-257)

It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (S) that there is no barrier between the person who recites this ayah after every prayer and Jannah except for death ie. he will be taste the pleasures of Jannah immediately after his death, and only that person will be able to recite it who is pious and righteous.

4. Ayah al-Madhkurah (Surah ar-Rum: 17-22)

Whoever recites this after every compulsory prayer will get a reward equal to drops of rain and grains of sand. The Holy Prophet (S) has highly recommended the recitation of this ayah especially during the early morning and evening times.

5. Ayah as-Sakhrah (Surah A’araaf: 54)

This should also be recited after every prayer. The benefit of reciting this ayah is that it acts as a protection from Shaitan. It is said that the one who recites this ayah is protected against the plots of Shaitan even if he is alone in the desert.

Other recitations are also recommended, for example, it is said in a narration that whoever recites Surah at-Tawhid after prayers will wed a Hur-ul-Ein in Jannah. It is recommended that Surah at-Tawhid be recited ten times after every prayer and this leads to being forgiven be Allah (S.w.T.) and being blessed with the good of this world and the hereafter.

For the sake of brevity, here is a list of ayaat and Surahs that are also recommended to be recited after prayers:

a) Surah al-Ahzaab: 56

b) Surah al-Baqarah: 285-286

c) Surah al-Kahf: 109-110

d) Surah as-Saffaat: 1-10 and then the last three ayaat.

e) Surah ar-Rahman: 33-36

f) Surah al-Hashr: 21-24

g) Surah al-An’aam: 1-3

h) Surah al-Falaq, an-Naas, ar-Rahman al-Qadr, al-Fatehah, Ya Sin, al-Waaqiyah, al-Mulk, ad-Dahar and an-Naba are all recommended.

Verses to be recited before sleeping

It is narrated that whoever recites [Surah al-Fatir: 41] before going to sleep is kept safe from the collapse of his home on top of him. Imam Ali (a.s.) has said that if a person recites [Surah al-A’araaf: 196] and [Surah az-Zumar: 67] before going to sleep, he will be safe from drowning (if he is sleeping on a ship) or burning (in his home).

Recitation of [Surah al-Kahf: 110] is good for making a person wake up at a particular time. All that has to be done is to make an intention of the exact time you wish to wake up and then recite this ayah before sleeping. Surah at-Takathur is also recommended and the Holy Prophet (S) said that whoever recites it before sleeping will be saved from the horrors of the grave.

Recitations specifically for Thursday nights and Fridays

It is recorded that if a person recites Surah Bani-Isra’il on Thursday night, he will meet the 12th Imam (a.t.f.) and will be among his companions. The one who recites Surah al-Kahf will die a martyr and will be raised with the martyrs on the Day of Judgement.

Whoever recites Surah Saad on Thursday night will be blessed with good in this world and good in the hereafter to such an extent that nobody except the prophets and those who are very close to Allah (S.w.T.) will get a similar reward.

If Surah ad-Dukhan is recited on this night, all his sins will be forgiven. He will get the reward equivalent to that of freeing a thousand slaves for each letter he recites and seventy thousand angels will pray for his sins to be forgiven. The one who recites Surah al-Waqi’ah will be counted from the friends of Allah (S.w.T.). The other Surahs that have been recommended on Thursday nights are Surah an-Naml, al-Qasas and Hamim Sajdah.

On the day of Friday, the Surahs that are highly recommended are Surah al-Ikhlaas, an-Naas, al-Falaq, at-Tawba, al-Kahf, as-Saffaat, ar-Rahman, an-Nisaa, Hud and al-Qadr. All these carry great reward and should be recited if possible. Imam Ali (a.s.) has said that whoever recites Surah an-Nisaa on Fridays will be protected from the torments of the grave. The one who recites Surah Hud will be counted with the prophets and messengers and his sins will be forgiven.

The benefit of reciting Surah al-Kahf is that all sins of the past week are forgiven. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) said that if a person recites Surah as-Saffaat on this day, he will be protected from all calamities and misfortunes. The one who recites Surah ar-Rahman will have a shining face on the Day of Judgement.

It is also recommended to recite [at-Tawba:128-129] and [al-Hashr: 21-24] on Friday mornings.

Recitations for increase in sustenance

It is narrated that writing Surah al-Mu’min at night and then keeping it in one’s place of business increases sustenance. Keeping Surah al-Hijr in one’s pocket or tied to the arm is also a means of increase in livelihood. Surah al-Qaari’ah should be worn around the neck and Surah al-Waaqi’ah should be recited every night to stay independent in terms of earning an income. Reciting Surah adh-Dhariyaat every day also increases sustenance.

Writing [al-Fatir: 29-30] and keeping it at the place of trade also acts as a means of increase in income. Keeping [al-Jumu’ah: 4] together with your goods for sale brings blessing and keeps the goods safe from damage. Drinking water in which Surah Yusuf has been dissolved (after writing) also increases sustenance.

Verses that help to quickly repay debts

As mentioned earlier, ayah al-Mulk [Ali-’Imran: 26-27] should be recited for those who wish to repay their debts. One should recite this ayah and then supplicate to Allah (S.w.T.) that he wishes to repay his debts and seeks help for doing so. For the same purpose, the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah should also be recited after every ‘Isha prayer.

The recitation of ayah al-Kursi after every prayer and reciting Surah al-Waaqi’ah 41 times are other means of getting divine assistance in the repaying of debts.

Counted amongst the most important chapters of the Quran, Surah Al Ikhlas is also referred to as The Sincerity, The Purity and Surah Tawheed. Consisting of four verses known as Surah Ikhlas Ayat, it is the 112th chapter of the Quran, which focuses on the unity and oneness of god. It is believed that this Surah was revealed during the Quraysh conflict with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) when they challenged the distinguishing attributes of the god worshipped by the Prophet. As it exclusively focuses on Tawheed (the indisputable concept of monotheism and the oneness of god), Al Ikhlas is not just this Surah’s name but also the title of its contents.

Significance of Surah Al Ikhlas in Islam: Held in particularly high regard by Muslims worldwide, Surah Al Ikhlas is considered to be equal in value to one-third of the entire Quran. This is because all of the Quranic teachings are essentially based on three principles, the first of which is the oneness of god. Surah Al Ikhlas affirms the concept of Allah’s oneness and invalidates all forms of idolatry and polytheism. This solidifies the significance of Surah Al Ikhlas as the entire foundation of Islam is built on the absolute belief in Allah’s oneness. As per Islam, there is no other god besides Allah. He has no associates, partners, or helpers.

Surah Al Ikhlas Ayats

Surah Al Ikhlas has four Ayats, all of which together support Shahada, one of the pillars of Islam, which emphasizes that there is no true deity besides Allah. Its first Ayat proclaims the oneness of Allah. The second Ayat declares that Allah is As-Samad, which means he has all the characteristics of perfection. This Ayat proclaims that he is the one who everybody depends on, but he doesn’t depend on anyone. It also indicates that he is unlike his creation. The Surah’s third Ayat states that neither was he born nor did he ever give birth. And, the fourth and final Ayat declares that he is beyond comparison and that no one is equal to him.

Benefits of Reciting Surah Al Ikhlas

Several Hadiths underline the virtues of Surah Al Ikhlas. Reciting this Surah offers the same reward as reciting a third of the Quran. It is believed that Allah will gather all the good of this world and the next one for those who recite this Surah. It is also believed that all the sins of those who don’t abandon the recitation of this Surah will be forgiven by Allah along with the sins of his/her parents and children. Reciting Surah Al Ikhlas is believed to be the means of earning Allah’s love and attaining paradise. It also banishes poverty and increases sustenance. In addition, the constant recitation of this Surah makes a person worthy of having the archangel Jibreel participate in his/her funeral prayer.

Surah Ikhlas Hadiths

There are numerous Hadiths that underline the significance and virtues of this surah. And, some of these Hadiths are as follows:

Abu Said Al-Khudri narrated, “A man heard another man reciting Surah Al Ikhlas repeatedly. He went to the Prophet and informed him thinking that the recitation of this Surah alone was not enough. Allah’s Apostle replied, “By him in whose hand my life is, it is equal to one-third of the Quran.”

Aisha, peace, and blessings, narrated, “The Prophet sent an expedition under the leadership of a man who led his companions in the prayers and finished his recitation with Surah Al Ikhlas. When they returned, they mentioned this to the Prophet. He said, “Ask him why he does so.” When they asked him, he replied, “I do so because this Surah states the qualities of the merciful Allah and I love to recite it.” When the Prophet heard this, he said, “Tell him that Allah loves him.”

Abu Said narrated, “The Prophet asked his companions, “Is it difficult for any of you to recite one-third of the Quran in one night?” They replied, “Who among us has the power to do so?” Allah’s Apostle said, “Allah (the) one, the self-sufficient master whom all creatures need.”

Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi, “Say Surat Al Ikhlas and al-Mu’awwidhatayn three times in the morning and the evening; they will suffice you from everything.”

Aisha narrated, “Whenever the Prophet went to bed every night, he cupped his hands together and blew over them after reciting Surah Al Ikhlas, Surah an-Nas, and Surah al-Falaq. Then, he rubbed his hands over every part of his body he could, starting with his face, head, and front. He did that three times every night.”

Imam Ahmad recorded Ibn ‘Umar saying, “I watched the Prophet reciting twenty-four or twenty-five times in the two Rak’ahs before the morning prayer and the two Rak’ahs after the sunset prayer, say: O ye infidels! (Surah Al-Kafirun) and say: He is Allah, one.”

Imam Malik ibn Anas recorded that Ubayd bin Hunayn said that he heard Abu Hurayrah say, “I went out with the Prophet and he heard a man reciting Surah Al Ikhlas. So, the prophet said: It is obligatory. I asked: What is obligatory?” and he replied: Paradise.”

All these hadith highlight that Surah al Ikhlas is an important chapter in the Quran and Islamic scholars recommend reciting it as well as understanding its message.
