RABBI HABLI HUKMAN (DUA FOR INCREASE IN KNOWLEDGE)

In the Quran Surah Ghafir ayat 40 Allah tells the reader,
“Call upon Me; I will respond to you.” Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible”
Having confidence in yourself is necessary to achieving whatever it is your pursuing, but believing only in your ability to get things done is dangerous. All things happen through Allah and it is important we seek his help and his guidance in whatever it is we are doing.
In Surah Baqarah ayat 186 Allah says,
“And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.”
The rabbi habli hukman dua we will explore today is from Surah Ash-Shu’ara ayat 83, it asks Allah to place us among the righteous and for him to bestow us with knowledge and wisdom so that we may make good judgements.

RABBI HABLI HUKMAN IN ARABIC TEXT

In Arabic the rabbi habli hukman dua is written,
رَبِّ هَبْ لِى حُكْمًۭا وَأَلْحِقْنِى بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
Transliteration: Rabbi Habli Hukman Wa Alhiqni Bis Saliheen

RABBI HABLI HUKMAN DUA MEANING

The english meaning of this dua according to Dr. Mustafa Khattab “My Lord! Grant me wisdom, and join me with the righteous.” Dr. Ghali translation is “My Lord! Bestow upon me judgment, and join me with the righteous”.
In Muhsin Khan translation of this ayat he writes, “My Lord! Bestow Hukman (religious knowledge, right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood) on me, and join me with the righteous;”
Note the word Hukman in this instance does not refer to asking Allah for Prophethood, in the Tafsir of Abul Ala Maudud he says
“Hukm here does not mean Prophethood, because at the time this prayer was made, Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) had already been appointed a Prophet. Even if this prayer was made before that, Prophethood is not bestowed at request, but it is something which Allah Himself bestows on those He wills. That is why hukm has been translated wisdom, knowledge, right understanding and power of judgment”
The tafsir continues with explaining the benefits to those who recite this dua:
“Join me with the righteous”: Give me a righteous society to live here in this world and raise me along with the righteous in the Hereafter. To be raised back to life with the righteous and to attain one’s salvation have one and the same meaning. Therefore, this should be the prayer of every person who believes in the life-after-death and in reward and punishment. Even in this world a pious man cherishes the desire that God should save him from living a life in an immoral and wicked society and should join him with the righteous people. A pious and righteous person will remain ill at ease and restless until either his own society should become clean and pure morally, or he leaves it to join another society which is practicing and following the principles of truth and honesty.”

SLIGHLY LONGER VARIATION OF THIS DUA

In the Quran, it continues from ayat 83-85,
Transliteration: [ayat 83] Rabbi hab lee hukmanw wa alhiqnee bis saaliheen [ayat 84] Waj’al lee lisana sidqin fil akhirin [ayat 85] Waj’alnee minw warasati Jannnatin Na’eem.
Translation: [83] “My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous. [84] And grant me a reputation of honor among later generations. [85] And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure”.
